How Much Paint Do I Need for 500 Square Feet?

For 500 square feet of paintable surface, many projects need about 1.5 gallons for one coat or about 3 gallons for two coats, assuming 350 square feet of coverage per gallon and a small waste buffer.

Quick estimate

At 350 square feet per gallon, 500 square feet needs about 1.43 gallons for one coat before waste. With 10% waste, round to about 1.6 gallons. For two coats, round to about 3.2 gallons before choosing actual can sizes.

This table assumes 350 square feet per gallon and 10% waste.

How coverage per gallon changes the answer

Paint products do not all cover the same area. Rough walls, heavy texture, porous drywall, dramatic color changes, and cheaper paint can reduce coverage. A smoother wall with a similar color may use less.

Do you need primer for 500 square feet?

Primer is estimated separately from finish paint. If the surface is new drywall, stained, patched, glossy, or changing from a dark color to a light color, plan a primer coat. For 500 square feet with 350 square feet per gallon and 10% waste, primer is about 1.57 gallons for one coat.

What can 500 square feet mean?

Five hundred square feet can mean wall surface area, ceiling area, trim area, or total paintable area from a floor plan. It does not always mean a 500-square-foot apartment. Walls have more square footage than the floor because you are painting vertical surfaces.

Estimate 500 square feet with your own assumptions

Use the paint calculator by square feet when you already know the measured area. Use the main interior painting calculator when you want to start from room dimensions and subtract doors and windows.

Planning note

Always check the coverage rate on the paint label. The examples above use 350 square feet per gallon because it is a common planning assumption, but the product you buy may be higher or lower.
